Rhymney brothers ‘King of the Castles’
4 Rhymney comprehensive school pupils competed in the annual Caerphilly and district school chess tournament at Blackwood C.S. towards the end of the Autumn term, and all achieved impressive results. Brothers Alex and Robert Mat both won their respective age group tournaments and were awarded the winners trophy, a certificate of recognition and a £20 voucher. Kyle Redwood and Robert Evans followed up the brothers win with second places in their age group tournament.
Chess at Rhymney has undergone a revival of late under the watchful eye of the school’s own Grandmaster – Mr Richard Holroyd. Mr Holroyd runs a number of extra curricular clubs for the pupils at the school both during the lunch period, and after school. Indeed for his Lan club there is a waiting list in order to gain entry.
Headteacher of Rhymney Comprehensive Mr. Meredydd James commented “I would like to congratulate the members of the school’s chess club who impressed all here at the school with their performances in the annual chess tournament. Two 1 st places and two 2 nd places is a real achievement considering some of the pupils have only recently taken up the game. It will be a challenge to defend the crowns next year – but one I am sure Mr Holroyd and his charges will rise to. I must also take this opportunity to praise the extra curricular work undertaken by Mr Holroyd and many other members of staff here at Rhymney comp, the numerous clubs, teams and societies available offer pupils the opportunity to achieve in a number of disciplines not just academically, they are part of the hidden curriculum every school needs in order to be a success.”
