Rhymney Comprehensive School improve their GCSE results !! – again and again

5 A* - Cs – 42%

The pupils, parents, staff, and Headteacher of Rhymney Comprehensive school were celebrating the publication of the school’s annual GCSE exam results today - this year’s cohort of pupils have improved further on the impressive results from last year as 42% of pupils achieved 5A* to C grades at GCSE level

Rhymney also saw the number of pupils who achieved the Core subjects of English, Maths and Science improve by a dazzling 4% on last year’s figure of 24%, a pleasing result of the school placing extra resources into making sure it’s pupils leave compulsory schooling having achieved a competent level in their Basic skills.

The results are a real cause for celebration, an achievement that has left Meredydd James the headteacher very pleased “Rhymney Comprehensive school has again returned record breaking exam results at Advanced level, and GCSE level. Achieving 42% for the number of pupils gaining 5A* to Cs is a tremendous level of attainment especially when one considers we are located in an area of below average socioeconomic income – an indicator accepted by the welsh assembly government as normally a barrier to educational achievement.

The cohort of pupils who have just left their compulsory schooling have performed better than the previous year’s pupils, and deserve all the plaudits they will undoubtedly receive from parents family and friends.

The fact that this year’s batch of young people have done so well in the Core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science is really encouraging and reflects all the hard work put in throughout their studies by pupils and staff. We hold the nationally accredited Basic Skills quality mark and I am sure the 4% improvement in the number of pupils achieving the core subject indicator is reflective of the decision we as a school made several years ago to increase the resources invested in this area of the curriculum.

We will continue to support next year’s year 11 by reducing class sizes further with the objective that this very positive upward trend continues.

What the general public must remember is that at the turn of the millennium (2000) Rhymney’s GCSE results were 31%. This year’s results of 42% mean that the school has improved by 11% over a 7 year period. This is not a coincidence – rather it is due to hardwork by my staff and the pupils and their parents. To all I publicly thank them for their efforts – and to next years year 11 – I will be expecting even better results when they return to school next week”

The head of year 11 at the school Mr. David Cartwright was also impressed “It is both a day of celebration and a sad day for me, mainly because it is the last contact I will have with many of the pupils as they continue their post 16 studies elsewhere. Over the past 4 years as their head of year I have built up many strong interpersonal relationships with the cohort, and continually been impressed with the level of ability contained within the year group. They have been a year group of high achievers, and it is time for them to take that next step on their lifelong learning pathway to education, employment or training – good luck to all”.
